The solar car port installed at BCP Council’s offices by Batchelor Electrical is thought to be one of the UK’s largest singular frame designs. It provides over 135,000kWh/year of usable electricity, which is equivalent to over 13% of the electricity needs of the adjacent Council headquarters.  Any generation from the solar installation is consumed in the Council building, meaning that the business case works and BPC Council can significantly reduce its utility bills whilst cutting carbon.

The solar canopy was custom designed and manufactured allowing for no loss of parking spaces and the installation of over 500 solar panels over one large array. The array provides protection from the elements to the vehicles and employees whilst also assisting with keeping the panels cool and more efficient by allowing air flow underneath.

Batchelor Electrical installed auto-dimming energy efficient LED lighting with passive and photocell control on the underside of the canopy. Further additions included 3 fast charging electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and one Siemens rapid charger providing a 20-minute charge to harness the solar PV generation.

The installation was recognised as a finalist at the national Solar Power Awards at the NEC, Birmingham.

We have been impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm shown by Batchelor when faced with a challenging and innovative project.
